Victor Eyo: “I want to put Africa at the forefront of technological development and global advancement”

In this episode (Episode 2) of “Voices”, we have a chat with Victor Eyo

Q: Tell me a little about yourself

I’m Victor Eyo, an award-winning Changemaker, innovator, and social and tech entrepreneur Passionate about solving humanity’s problems by leveraging tech.

I work to tackle unemployment, illiteracy (digital illiteracy inclusive), poverty and bridging the digital divide gap in Africa.

I am dynamic, optimistic and enthusiastic. A leader to 1k+ Teen Techies and working to give 500,000 Teenagers across Africa access to digital skills

Q: Why did you decide to take the path you’re currently on?

This is because of some young persons I met once at a local community secondary school in Calabar, Cross River state and somehow engaged in a conversation with them and found out they were all Tech Enthusiasts but then they saw learning a tech skill or owning a computer as a dream far-fetched, one that couldn’t be achieved.

I was shocked yet sad and you know I asked myself a question “In what part of the world do young persons see owning a computer or learning a tech skill as a big dream”

Since then I made up my mind I was going to bridge the digital divide gap and make Teens in Africa employable in the socio-economic technological space

Q: What advice do you have for other young Nigerians like you?

Don’t always be the one to complain on and on about an issue. Be innovative. Create solutions.

And don’t let anyone fool you, you’re relevant.

Q: What kind of legacy do you want to leave?

I want to put Africa at the forefront of technological development and global advancement and also Teen Tech Leaders that would unlock Africa’s digital economy and lead the world in the digital space.

Q: What is Wegodigiteens and what brought about the idea?

Wegodigiteens is an initiative dedicated to changing the world’s perception of Africa in view of technology as we raise Teen Tech Leaders, Innovators and Entrepreneurs that would unlock Africa’s Digital economy and lead the world in the digital space.

And what brought about the idea- I’ll say my encounter with those young persons from the local community secondary school. And also growing up my parents didn’t want me to go into Tech and had to pave my path on my own- it was difficult, really difficult no support, or resources. Nothing at all, I use to borrow a laptop from an acquaintance of mine. Then it dawned on me that they are teenagers who are going through this same challenge and I sort to help!

Q: What do you do at Wegodigiteens? What projects have you done so far?

At Wegodigiteens we train teenagers in tech skills, free courses unhindered.

We offer the best technological grooming and growing platform for every African teenager, giving them access to digital skills

Wegodigiteens have organized several projects and some of them include:

Our Girls can code workshop and Teen Girls and Tech Tanzania, Digital School Tour, Deaf, Dumb and Tech, Sickle cell and tech, Wedey4u Tech boot camps, among others.

Q: Of all the projects you’ve done, which was your favourite?

The Deaf, Dumb and Tech workshop is my favourite of all projects we’ve organized at Wegodigiteens.

It was new and something totally out of the box.

It was difficult at first to train young people with hearing and speech impairments, but it was really impactful and amazing.

I could tell we really did change their lives by the smiles and tears in their eyes at their graduation ceremony.

Q: When you carry out a project, what gives you the most joy from it?

The Impact made and the lessons learned too.

I notice I feel so much joy when I’m either interacting with the participants or watching them learn and explore too.

Q: What is the long-term vision of this initiative?

To expand to every city and town across Africa with physical and virtual hubs.

Building Teen Tech Leaders with Sustainable startups that have groundbreaking innovations leading the world at the forefront of global advancement and technological development.

Q: How can other young people join your initiative?
